The seminar is presented by the National Center for Constitutional Studies (NCCS), and I just learned that the presenter is the brother of Arizona Senator Russell Pearce, who sponsored SB-1070, Arizona’s new immigration legislation.

If you want to attend, you must register by this Monday, May 10! Details are below. I’ll also post this as a Meetup on the Texas Conservative revolution site, but you must register for the event with We The People Are The 9-12 Association.

The fees for this event cover the costs of the workbooks and airfare to get the instructor here and are as follows:

Urgent Action Alert

2010 April 29

ACTION ALERT

The Obama Administration and the Progessist Congress are pushing very hard to get their Progressive Agenda through. We need all Patriots to get involved on all those fronts.

You must act NOW to stop adding a 51st State to the USA!  Vote on the House Floor Today!!

There is a vote scheduled to take place TODAY (Thursday, April 29th) in the U.S. House of Representatives on HR 2499, which would force Puerto Rico to become the 51st U.S. State.

Three times in the past 43 years Puerto Ricans have voted against becoming the 51st state in the Union. The last time was about 11 years ago. They enjoy their commonwealth status which allows them to enjoy the protection and freedoms and even financial benefits of the United States without paying federal income taxes.

HR 2499 would actually force a yes-or-no vote by Puerto Ricans on whether Puerto Rico should maintain the “current political status” of the island. This doesn’t seem so bad until the second part of the legislation comes into play; a second vote would take place, this one giving Puerto Ricans no option but statehood or full independence if the majority expresses dissatisfaction with the current political status. Even if there is no dissatisfaction and the “current political status” is favored, every eight years henceforth from the passage of HR 2499 Puerto Rico is forced to conduct another plebiscite on the matter at their own expense.

The problem of reassigning some seats in the U.S. House of Representatives is that by handing at least six or seven seats over to Puerto Rico, it would deprive six or seven existing states of one representative each because of the congressional mandated 435 seat cap. (This type of political maneuvering seems partisan because the seats in the Senate and the House would likely become Democratic ones, and electoral votes awarded Puerto Rico might outnumber those of 22 current states.)
Before American taxpayers have to absorb and bailout another financially failing institution – this time the island of Puerto Rico – both Americans and Puerto Ricans need to know and understand that this could just be a case of politicians using this very opaque legislation as a means to whatever ends they envision for not only Puerto Rico and the United States, but also for the political dynamics this situation might bring with it in the future.

Want more information?  Here is a Must Read:

What would statehood for Puerto Rico mean – the need for facts!

Here are some quick facts:

  • The Puerto Rico Democracy Act would allow a federally sanctioned referendum to be conducted in Puerto Rico.  Voters would be asked whether they support the present form of commonwealth government, or if they want Puerto Rico to seek a different political status. If the majority selects that they want a different political status, then another referendum would be held giving voters three options: Independence, Sovereignty in Association with the United States, or Statehood.
  • Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth. Residents of Puerto Rico lack voting representation. They do not participate in presidential elections.  As U.S. citizens, Puerto Ricans are subject to military service and most federal laws. In the present legislation, Commonwealth status is not an option.
  • Puerto Rico has a Governor that is elected directly for a four-year term. There is a bicameral legislature. This consists of a 27-member Senate and a 51-member House of Representatives. Each of these is elected for four-year terms.
  • Most Puerto Ricans do not consider English as their sole official language.  No non-English speaking state has ever joined the union.
  • If Puerto Rico were to become a state of the union, it would then be allowed 2 Senators and possibly 6 – 8 Congressional members.
  • at least four of our local Congressmen have signed as Co-sponsors of this Bill: Sheila Jackson Lee, but also John Culbertson, Michael McCaul and Ted Poe!  Poe and Culberson were co-sponsors of the original bill but say no longer support it as it was drastically altered while in committee.  We haven’t reached McCaul yet.If you do not agree with the passage of this bill, then contact your Congressman and Senators and send a message that you are unwilling to have them support such a bill until all the political, economic, and cultural details are out on the table for both Puerto Rico and the U.S. Urge them to oppose HR 2499 on the grounds that it is a very bad move in the present economic and financial climate.

Listed below are Representatives from both the Democrat and Republican parties. If you think this is bad legislation and is not what is good for our country, we ask that you contact these members and let them know that this bill is not what the American people want and that they must vote NO!

Viewing Party

2010 January 10
by admin

YOU’RE INVITED to a Viewing Party this Thursday, January 14, to watch Debra Medina and the other two “Republican” candidates debate the issues that are vital to the future of Texas: fiscal responsibility, limited government, property rights, gun ownership, immigration, education, and most importantly, our State Sovereignty rights under the Constitution.

Give “Political Party” a whole new meaning! Meet new people as you learn where the candidates stand, so you can decide who will BEST represent Texans in these challenging times. Come early if you want a snack or dinner before the show (on your own tab) – room opens at 6:00pm. The debate runs 7:00-8:00pm – then afterwards we can have our own “debate” about the candidates’ responses. The issues are serious, but we can have a little fun with our politics!

Fox & Hound – Willowbrook
17575 Tomball Parkway, Houston 77064
(Southbound between 1960 and Gessner – next to Hooters)
Tel: 281-894-6100
We’ll be in a private room in back.

Please reply if you plan to attend, so I’ll have an idea how many to expect. If not, please watch the debate at home (live or rebroadcast) – all PBS channels will show it, including our local Channel 8, and other networks may show it as well.  Details below.

Health Care Debate Back On in the Senate

2009 September 21
by admin

From Erin Anderson:

Health Care tops the list (again!) this week as the Senate Finance Committee debates the latest health care proposal from Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) starting Tuesday morning.  Already Senators on both sides have hundreds of amendments to offer, but the Committee will try to vote on a final bill by the end of the week, so the time for YOUR input is NOW!

GET INFORMED
A summary of the Baucus plan is in this Wall Street Journal article:
Public Option Lite: The Baucus plan would make insurance even more expensive.

Some “highlights” of Baucus’s proposal (which would have to be combined with the HELP Committee version to create one Senate bill) include:

  1. An individual mandate requiring EVERYONE to buy health insurance (with tax-funded subsidies for lower-income people) or pay a penalty.
  2. Government requirements on what must be included in every insurance plan.
  3. Set pricing that can’t be tied to risk (not a good business model for insurance, which is all about risk).
  4. Limits on what people pay in but not on what insurers pay out (sounds good except again, it’s not a sustainable business model).
  5. No refusals for pre-existing conditions (again, sounds good, but people can wait until they’re sick then sign up for coverage, which is bad).
  6. Expansion of Medicaid rolls, which pushes costs to the states.  (Harry Reid says it’s “not right for Nevada”!)
  7. A 35% tax on “high-end” insurance plans.  (Dems and Repubs hate this one – see below)
  8. Taxes on pharmaceutical and medical supply companies.
  9. Insurance “co-ops” instead of an overt “government option”.
  10. About $400 billion in Medicare cuts.

The federal government defines it, prices it, and makes you buy it – so how is this NOT a governnment takeover?

For a more general discussion of government-controlled health care – and a trip down memory lane – listen to this audio clip by Ronald Reagan on the dangers of socialized medicine froom back in the 60’s:  http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articles/article/198/29847/

TAKE ACTION

Contact your Senators and let them know what you think about the Baucus plan and Health Care reform in general.  Don’t want the federal government to dictate health insurance?  Let them know!  Think they should focus on eliminating waste and fraud in Medicare and Medicaid before starting any new programs?  Let them know!  Wonder why lawsuit reform isn’t mentioned in this plan?  Let them know!  If you have more time, you can contact ALL Senators on the Finance Committee – I’ve attached a list with their phone, fax, and email information.

FYI:  On the Dem side, Blanche Lincoln is withholding support due to the cost (yea!), while Rockefeller and others won’t support the tax on “Cadillac” plans because many of their union supporters have those plans.  On the Repub side, Snowe was wavering but also opposes the high-end tax because insurance is so expensive in her home state of Maine that many of her constituents will be negatively affected.

FYI: We are fortunate here in Texas to have a choice of dozens of insurance companies that are free to offer a variety of plans, which are made affordable due to choice and competition as well as the fact that Texas enacted tort reform (which has attracted more doctors to our state).  But health insurance is currently (heavily) regulated by state government, and that regulation affects prices and choices in each state.  Yet federal regulations prohibit the sale of health insurance across state lines, so some states are stuck with only a few expensive options.  Might we easily allow interstate insurance sales to increase choice and competiton?  Or consider Massachussetts, where a program similar to the Baucus plan was implemented with poor results – costs much higher than anticipated, escalating insurance prices, and many people still choosing not to participate in the “mandatory” system.  Not the best model for a national plan – in fact, NO one national plan could hope to serve the needs of every state, which is why I contend that the federal government should take a BIG step back.  If you agree, LET THEM KNOW!

Constitution Day

2009 September 17
by admin

Today is Constitution Day, commemorating the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787.  It’s undergone a few revisions in its 222-year history, but our Constitution remains an amazing and unique guide to governing a democratic republic that operates under the rule of law and vests power in “We The People” above all others.

I encourage everyone to re-read this vital founding document, which is relatively short.  Notice that it grants only a few specific powers to the federal government, reserving all others to the states or to the people.

You might ask yourself whether in recent years our government has stayed within its Constitutional boundaries or has strayed off course, consolidating more and more power (and tax dollars) at the federal level, at the expense of states and the people.

You can find the text of the U.S. Constitution by following this link.

Enjoy your reading.  Renew your appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy under the Constitution, and then decide what you’re willing to do to uphold, protect and defend it against all enemies.

Happy Constitution Day,

Erin Anderson
